You have heard it before Vicks are not recommended for children for under two and some pediatricians say maybe not even under the age of five. The menthol salve is used to relieve symptoms of cough and congestion but the ingredients in Vicks can be irritants causing the body to produce more mucus to protect the airway. Infants and young children have airways that are much narrower than those that are older, so an increase in mucus can narrow them much more severely. Baby Vicks and Maty’s great for babies, but what if you’re limited on availability of it?
Little One (LO) and I have a monster cold, we had attended a baby sign language class and spread their germs to LO. Although, I loved seeing him play and make friends, these two little girls had goobery noses and was coughing everywhere. Sad to say this mother of the year did not realize it until it was too late and now we are both sick. A few days later when I reached for the baby vicks, I noticed that I only a few more uses left, we went to the store only to find that they did not carry baby vicks at all. I searched on amazon for Baby Vicks and Matys, but the problem was that I needed it now, not seven to ten business days later.
Then, as if lightening had struck me, I thought…. Why don’t I make my own baby Vicks?! So I quickly searched the web and tried this recipe
What you will need:
Lavender Essential Oil
Peppermint Essential Oil
Eucalyptus Essential Oil
Find a useful container to use, an old Vicks container or and old baby food jar would be perfect containers. I just grabbed a Tupperware container.
Add about 4 tablespoons of coconut oil to your container. Some have complained about the runny consistency of this, I didn’t mind it at all, in fact I like to even better. But if it bothers you, you can do 1 tablespoon coconut oil and 3 tablespoons Vaseline.
Add 8-10 drops of Eucalyptus, 6 drops of peppermint, and 6 drops of lavender. The Maty’s all natural brand’s two main ingredients is eucalyptus and peppermint. I like the smell of the lavender in the baby Vicks so I added the lavender with mine. If you do not like lavender you can also use wintergreen essential oil but I find the smell pretty intense. Adding the lavender seems to put a nice balance between the three oils.
Mix everything together and you got yourself a Homemade baby Vicks!... and you can totally use it on grown-ups too. I use this over the regular stuff.
Please keep in mind; I am not a medical professional, so please… if your baby or child is in need of medical attention, please consult a doctor. You’re a parent; you know when to decide when you should take your child in.
